About Kristian Schuller
Kristian Schuller, born in 1970 in Romania, is one of the most renowned contemporary fashion photographers. Growing up surrounded by art and culture—his father was a dramaturge and director, his mother an art teacher—Schuller was inspired from a young age to escape the gray monotony of communist life. Moving to Germany, he studied fashion design under Vivienne Westwood and photography with the legendary German fashion photographer and art collector F.C. Gundlach. His distinctive style, characterized by a play of light and color, quickly gained recognition. Schuller has worked with prestigious fashion magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, and became a star in his own right as a sharp-tongued juror on Heidi Klum’s “Germany’s Next Top Model.”
Together with his wife and creative partner Peggy Schuller, Kristian creates powerful visual compositions and dreamy scenes, blending fashion and art in a fascinating synthesis. Peggy’s costumes and input are integral to his creations. His artistic evolution is rapid, merging the real and the perfect with painterly elements to create surreal and mysterious worlds.
The Kristian Schuller Grand Show
This summer, the Kristian Schuller Grand Show in Graz promises to be a highlight, featuring 115 large-format photographs by the famous fashion photographer. Organized by Atelier Jungwirth, Messe Graz, and Kristian Schuller himself, the exhibition opened May 23rd and will run until August 31, 2024. Following the success of the Steve McCurry exhibition in 2021, this new collaboration with Messe Congress Graz presents Schuller’s colorful worlds in grand formats of 2 x 3 meters and 3 x 4.5 meters, with the images displayed floating and backlit to emphasize their power and magical moments.
Visitors can expect opulent and vibrant images alongside more minimalistic works from the last 20 years. Each photograph tells a vivid and dynamic story, with Schuller’s unique visual language evident in his sensitive and intense portraits of Sharon Stone, Cate Blanchett, Heidi Klum, Penélope Cruz, and others.
The New scan.art Audio Guide
The Kristian Schuller exhibition in Graz also marks a significant step in integrating art with innovative technology, thanks to the Graz-based company scan.art. Their cutting-edge image recognition software provides audio and text descriptions of the artworks directly to visitors’ smartphones without the need for downloads or registration. This modern technology transforms the way art is experienced, offering deeper insights into the artistic background of each piece.
Kristian Schuller himself provides personal audio commentary for each image, bringing his artworks to life and sharing fascinating information about their creation and meaning. This feature adds an extra dimension to the exhibition, making it a unique experience in the German-speaking world.
